Psychological Pain - A blessing in disguise

I was asked this question couple of nights ago..Ankur, Why I am not motivated to do Self Improvement things like others are doing?

I asked him, Do you drink, he said yes. I said do you smoke.? He said yes.
I said, dear you are already miserable but not miserable enough to do something about it. you are in pain but not enough pain that you have to do some self improvement. And the pain (Psychological) is increasing every day bit by bit, its not going anywhere.

One day, the things you are doing right now will increase your pain (Psychological) to a breaking point that you will realize whatever you have been doing is not working. That day you will move onto self improvement things.

To give you an example you cannot drink liquor to the dying day of your life. At some point of time your body will say no, either your liver will go bad or something on those lines will happen. That day all the pain you have been suppressing will come up because now you cannot have the external stuff to suppress it (liquor), the pain(Psychological) will reach to its maximum capacity. That day everything will start changing for good. Remember as I said before, Pain was a blessing in disguise.

You have two choices here. Either you realize that things are not going the way they should be going or wait for that day when the pain goes beyond your capacity. The day is just delayed but not inevitable.
